AW Editor Article: A Reader’s Dilemma

When a Favorite Series Isn’t Published in Your Country

Only yesterday Leah was having a chat with the fabulous Lindsey Kelk, author of the I Heart series. Leah’s been working on creating a brand new US Release Page for the site and wondered when more of Lindsey’s books would be published here in the US. Come to find out, at the moment her publishers are planning to skip an entire book in the series! Yes, it’s possible that they may not publish I Heart Hollywood at all here in the US. Being the huge fan that I am of the first book in the series, I Heart New York, I was shocked and very disappointed!

How is it even possible for a publisher to skip an entire book in a series and why would they do that? Obviously, this isn’t limited to Lindsey’s books or HarperCollins at all and it’s certainly not the first book (or series) that’s only been published in one series, but what is a reader to do? If your favorite author suddenly stopped having their books published in your home country for whatever reason what would you do? Do you write the publisher? Start a campaign? I know that not too long ago another series, The Monstrumologist (not at all Chick Lit), had the remaining books in it’s series discontinued by the publisher Simon & Schuster, but after bloggers started a campaign to bring it back they changed their minds and the series will now be continued.

Now, for whatever reason be it lack of sales, the location featured in the book, the need for more attention on the web or any number of other things I Heart Hollywood will remain published outside of the US and not within. While I’m a huge Harper fan I can’t help but feel cheated in a way and sincerely hope they’ll change their minds. It’s absolutely a series I’d love to read straight through and know many other readers would as well. If you happen to be one of those readers I’d love to hear about it as well I’d also encourage you to blog about it, write an email to Harper, chat about it on Twitter and any other way you feel you could bring attention to this fantastic series for fans here in the US.

I’d love to hear from our readers…Do you have a series or favorite author who’s books aren’t published in whole or in part in your country? Have you attempted to read them in other ways and if so, how and did you see any results?

I read many UK authors but a lot of the time I have to buy their books when I visit London or from bookcloseouts.com or bookdepository.com. Some UK authors do have all their books published in the US (Sophie Kinsella and Isabel Wolff come to mind) but for others (e.g., Katie Fforde, Carole Matthews, Jill Mansell to name just a few; I could go on and on) it seems like the publishers pick and choose which books they want to publish. It’s very annoying. Same goes for Irish authors though Marian Keyes always has her books published in the US.

I am experiencing the same problem with Miranda Dickinson’s new book, It Started With A Kiss. I can’t find it anywhere in the U.S. and I know it just got released in the UK but her books are not easy to get here. I also can’t get Harriet Evans books on audio here in the U.S. Does anyone know where I could get audiobooks on her. It is on Audible but only for UK customers…

I have the same problem with a lot of UK authors as well. Until recently there was only like 3 Carole Matthews books I could get on Kindle. More of hers are trickling on to US Kindle now. Getting my Kindle I thought would help me be able to read more of my fave UK authors, but I can’t purchase anything from Kindle UK on my US Kindle. Major suckfest.
There are many Katie Fforde books I haven’t been able to get my hands on. Jill Mansell as well. Adele Parks. Jane Moore. Even Cecelia Ahern. Like someone above me said, my list could go on for ages. :(
Publishing houses AND authors are really missing out by pigeonholing who gets what…

Hi, I’m very very lucky to have Lindsey’s books published in my country. I’m really happy that my country takes in books of various editions. I am about to buy the UK or US edition of Sophie Kinsella’s but it depends on other authors too. I have tried Book Depository and they have really good book availability. And it’s somehow cheaper too! Otherwise, thank God Borders is still around! x

I find Irish authors really hard to come by sometimes or certain books in shops not available unless I go on amazon. Amazon are good but not the cheapest. At the moment I’m trying to get “Carol Mason – the love market” but it’s only available at amazon canada at a whopping £21, that’s including postage.

What a major bummer. I know what you mean. I’ve had that happen before. I think it was with an Australian book.
